What is Psychotherapy?

Is therapy for me?

A variety of instances, scenarios or events can reveal the need for therapy. For example, in times of change, challenge or traumatic incident, it is of particular importance to deal with the impact of this on our lives. Therapy creates a safe and non-judgmental space in which we can do the work required to reclaim or establish our well-being. We can all benefit from an opportunity to debrief and explore the issues that have an effect on our sense of self as well as on our functioning and relationships, and work towards a more meaningful way of living life and being in the world.

What requirements should a psychologist meet to be able to practice in South Africa?

After obtaining a relevant Master’s degree from an accredited university, a person trained in Clinical, Counselling or Educational psychology needs to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF). After registering with the BHF, a practice number is allocated to the psychologist which enables him or her to claim directly from a client’s medical aid.

Will my medical aid pay for therapy?

Medical aids often have differences in benefit cover for psychological services. Coverage will depend on your medical scheme plan. Be sure to contact your medical aid to learn more about possible coverage.

How long does a psychotherapy session last?

A regular psychotherapy session usually lasts 50 minutes.

What does a psychotherapy session cost?

Medical aids in South Africa determine a recommended fee for 50-minute psychotherapy sessions annually. For more information and details about the cost of a session, please contact the practice.
